Condition Details / Information Notes
Although there is some very minor damage to the Malvern stone retaining wall in the vicinity of T8, no conclusive links have been drawn between tree and damage. The wall does not appear to have been maintained in recent times (wall now covered in ivy), and previous repairs appear to have been undertaken with inflexible cement mortar whereas the more flexible lime based mortar should have been used. The tree works for T8, as specified in the arboricultural report, are not considered to have been sufficiently justified. The tree is a large and locally prominent specimen. The proposed works would be considered to the detriment of its appearance.
There is no significant damage or distortion evident in the Malvern stone retaining wall. The tree (referenced as T25 in tree survey) is, at its closest point, approximately 2 metre away from the retaining wall. The base of the tree is approximately 1 metre above top of wall height. The only damage evident is approximately 3 metres away from the base of the tree. Structural damage to pavements, walls and other light structures usually occurs within a 3 metre radius of the base of a tree. Therefore, the most significant area of damage to the wall is unlikely to attributable to the presence of the tree. There is no obvious distortion of the wall from the vertical. The tree has a heavy covering of ivy. It is noted that this has been present at least since the submission of a previous application for tree works (20/01006/TPOA). The tree’s ivy cladding will add weight to the tree and increase its sail area, particularly during the autumn winter months when winds are generally expected to be of higher velocity. Stripping the ivy from the canopy of the tree (not just severing it at its base) will reduce the tree’s sail area. No other works are, at present, considered necessary. The proposed works have not been sufficiently justified. The tree is a large and locally prominent specimen. The proposed works would be considered to the detriment of its appearance.
Unnecessary tree works should be avoided because of the potential risks tree works in general pose to the health and well being of trees. Unnecessary tree works should be avoided to: prevent xylem dysfunction – increased hydraulic stress; to minimise the waste of carbon allocated for defence – increased competition for carbon for regrowth and reproduction; to avoid reducing available leaf area – reduced carbon and other products for photosynthesis; to avoid reducing leaf/stem biomass – reduced nutrients available for resorption and recycling; to avoid physiological stress – increased pathogen and pest vulnerability; to reduce exposure of heartwood/sapwood – increased likelihood of pathogen colonisation
